Car Insurance: Up to 35% Off Young Drivers Premiums

Following in the footsteps of AA, BSM, Tesco, Direct Line, Privilege, Co-op and Zurich; Swinton now offer a discount on car insurance premiums for new drivers who have a Pass Plus certificate.

The Pass Plus scheme involves spending an extra 6 hours driving with a specially trained instructor covering such areas as; driving around built up areas, in poor weather conditions, on rural roads, at night, and on dual carriageways and motorways.

Over the years, as premiums for new drivers have risen, the scheme has proven a considerably cost effective option.

For instance, car insurance premiums for a newly qualified male driver can easily be in the region of £2,000. So, the £180 spent on the Pass Plus scheme could shave £700 of this figure.

"Research informs us that those drivers who pass their test with limited experience are most at risk. Pass Plus provides new drivers with the opportunity to gain further experience including driving on a motorway, with a professional driving instructor aiding their transfer to independent driving. A number of local authorities recognise the benefits of Pass Plus and provide support in terms of promotion and discount," says Nigel Harries, the DSA's deputy chief driving examiner.

The Pass Plus scheme can be taken anytime during the first 12 months of passing the basic UK driving test, with many driving schools offering the option.

It costs about the same as a normal driving test, so on average around £30 per hour. Depending on the individual skill of the driver, it may take more than 6 lessons before the instructor feels comfortable with issuing a Pass Plus certificate.
